Playtime is plentiful in Kelly and Jeremy
Osborne's 1965 California home, but the couple
didn’t necessarily play by the rules when they
remodeled. There’s the stage they built in their
sons’ bedroom for impromptu concerts. The
large dining room serves two functions—to
entertain friends and provide extra play space for
the kids. In the kitchen, Kelly turned a couple of
deep drawers into extra filing space for family
paperwork. “I made decisions based on what
suits our family instead of trying to think about
everything strictly as a return on an investment,”
says Kelly, a publicist.
When she and Jeremy, a builder, first saw the
house, it was overgrown with weeds. But they
knew instantly it was right for them. “The layout
was perfect,” she says. “We wanted a one-story
house because we do a lot of entertaining and a
ranch makes for better flow.” While the general
footprint stayed the same, new kitchen cabinets,
wood flooring, and new beams on the dining
room ceiling to add character refreshed the look.
“I’m glad I did what I wanted,” Kelly says,
recalling some of her decisions such as the green
exterior trim. “Even though we raised some
eyebrows along the way.”
